Federal prosecutors in South Texas have announced an indictment against the former governor of the Mexican border state of Tamaulipas.
The indictment was unsealed Monday against Tomas Yarrington Ruvalcaba alleging he engaged in money laundering and other financial crimes. Yarrington was governor of Tamaulipas from 1999 to 2004 and served in Mexico's congress.
The 56-year-old Yarrington and another man are accused of violating federal racketeering laws. Prosecutors say Yarrington received bribes from a drug cartel and in return allowed traffickers to distribute large amounts of cocaine into the U.S.
They further contend he collected bribes from commercial operations and that he was involved in the acquisition of valuable assets in the U.S., such as bank accounts and residences.
Yarrington is not in custody and is being sought by authorities.
