Former Officer Aquitted Of Wife's Death Files Lawsuit

A county south of Albuquerque if facing a lawsuit from a former police officer who was acquitted of killing his wife two years ago.

The Albuquerque Journal reports Tera Chavez was found dead of a gunshot wound in 2007 at the home she shared with former Albuquerque Police Officer Levi Chavez, who was arrested and charged with murder in 2011.

He was fired from his job shortly after.

Jurors acquitted him in 2013 and a wrongful death lawsuit filed by his wife's family was dismissed a week before he voluntarily gave up his police officer certification.

The lawsuit says there was no probable cause for the murder charge and names Valencia County sheriffs, commissioners and several other members of law enforcement.

He's seeking lost wages and other damages.
