Former UNM President Cleared In Prostitution Case Wants Privileges Restored

A former University of New Mexico president cleared earlier this year of running an online prostitution ring says he expects to have all of his privileges as a professor emeritus restored.

F. Chris Garcia said Thursday his suspension should be short-term and he should be allowed the return.

UNM suspended Garcia after he and another professor were arrested for overseeing an alleged online prostitution ring. But in January, the New Mexico Supreme Court ruled no state law prohibited running such websites.

Experts say decades-old laws in New Mexico and other states make it difficult for authorities and prosecutors to go after prostitution-linked websites.

UNM President Robert Frank says the university has not contacted Garcia about reinstatement because Garcia had not yet sent a request letter.
