Gila Catwalk Closed Thursday For Blasting Of Hazardous Rock

Glenwood, NM; July 15, 2013—The Catwalk National Recreation Trail (NRT) and Whitewater Picnic Area will be closed Thursday, July 18th, for blasting of hazardous rock outcrops. The area to be blasted is where the rock fall occurred on June 2, 2013. Blasting operations are expected to be completed in one day. Whitewater Picnic Area and the ¼ mile of the old trail are expected to be re-opened on Friday, July 19th, from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm.

Blasting operations are extremely hazardous! The public is requested to stay clear of the area.

If heavy rains are forecast in the high country above the Catwalk, and flash floods or flood potential exists, the Catwalk may be closed in the mornings for public safety. When it is safe, the Catwalk will be re-opened.

Prior to visitation to the Catwalk, it is important to contact the Glenwood Ranger District at 575.539.2481; the Supervisor’s Office in Silver City, 575.388.8201; or the Public Affairs Office, 575.388.8211 (office) or 575.574.2590 (after weekday hours or on weekends) for updated information.
