Gila Cliff Dwellings Closed Due To Ice Danger

By KRWG News

Silver City – The Cliff Dwellings will be closed until the danger from falling ice above the Dwellings themselves is over.

NPS staff will be ESCORTING visitors as far up Cliff Dweller Canyon.

NO fees will be charged during this period. NO estimate on when the danger will be over, but with the heavy wet snow received on Thursday 12/30 and the extremely cold temperatures forecast for the next several days it could be mid-week before the Cliff Dwellings can safely reopen.

Once the danger from falling ice is over, the Cliff Dwellings will resume usual winter hours, visitors may hike to the dwellings between 9:00 am and 4:00 pm, and while the gate to the dwellings closes at 4:00 pm, visitors have another hour in which to complete their hike.

A guided tour of the Cliff Dwellings is offered daily at 12:00 p.m. and persons planning to take a guided tour should begin hiking up from the trailhead contact station one-half hour before tour start time as the tour begins in the Cliff Dwellings. Visitors may also take the self-guided tour at any time the Cliff Dwellings are open, utilizing a free copy of the Canyon Companion trail guide available at the trailhead.

The multi-agency Gila Visitor Center is open daily from 8:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.
