Girl Who Drowned Was Sneaking Into El Paso With Father

By KRWG News

El Paso – Authorities say that a five-year-old girl who drowned last week in an El Paso irrigation canal near the Rio Grande was trying to sneak into the United States with her dad, who had miscalculated the strength of the water currents.

Eva Jaredzi Beltran-Aguilar of Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, died July 5 after she was found unconscious the previous night in the Franklin Canal, where rescuers were searching for a man the U.S. Border Patrol had seen in the water.

Mexican Consulate spokesman Adrian Sosa said Eva's mother identified her daughter and said she had agreed to her crossing with the father, who lived illegally in the United States.

The body of a man believed to be the father was recovered later. Authorities have ordered DNA tests to establish his identity.
