G.O. Bond C On New Mexico's Ballot

Former NMSU Chancellor Dr. Garrey Carruthers

More than $25 million in capital outlay projects are on the ballot for New Mexico State University campuses as part of the $169 million in proposed general obligation bonds that help pay for major projects across the state, including renovating university facilities.

There is no tax increase associated with GO Bond C.

If GO Bond C is approved in November, the funding will allow $19.2 million in facilities upgrades for Jett Hall, Jett Annex and Rentfrow Gym, which were built in the 1950s. The funds would be used for renovations and improvements to student labs and classrooms in these buildings.

“We’re not constructing new buildings,” NMSU President Garrey Carruthers said. “These funds are designated to repair and refurbish the buildings we already have. The Jett buildings, and Rentfrow Hall, were constructed in the 1950s and if you’ve been inside them, you know they are in serious need of renovations to improve the learning experience for our students.”

Jett Hall is home to the rapidly growing chemical, aerospace and mechanical engineering programs. The College of Education’s Human Performance, Dance and Recreation Department is housed in Rentfrow Hall. This program has seen enrollment triple in the last six years, mostly due to an increased demand for kinesiology degrees, and is in desperate need of an updated facility for its students.

GO Bond C also includes $5.9 million in infrastructure upgrades, renovations and construction for Dona Ana Community College, NMSU Alamogordo, NMSU Carlsbad and NMSU Grants.

Absentee and early voting began on Oct. 7 for GO Bond C. Early voting at dedicated locations runs from Saturday, Oct. 18 – Saturday, Nov. 1 with the election on Tuesday, Nov. 4.

General Obligation bonds come before the voters of New Mexico every two years to support projects throughout the state.
