GOP Candidate Announces Bid For Texas AG

Dallas Republican Dan Branch has announced his candidacy for Texas attorney general.

Branch spoke Tuesday at the Southern Methodist University law school where he earned his law degree. Branch has represented Dallas and Highland Park at the Texas House of Representatives since 2003.

Attorney General Greg Abbott is running for governor in year's election and Branch joins Railroad Commissioner Barry Smitherman in the Republican primary to replace him. No Democrat has entered the race yet.

Gov. Rick Perry's decision not to seek re-election has triggered a domino effect, with many politicians running for higher office.

Branch is an attorney in Dallas who formerly worked for the Texas Supreme Court and President Ronald Reagan's re-election campaign. He promised to fight federal regulations and decrease the number of frivolous lawsuits in Texas.
