Gov. Martinez Issues Drought Declaration

ALBUQUERQUE (AP) -- New Mexico Governor Susana Martinez has issued a drought declaration covering the entire state.

In a statement she said fire danger is high, water reservoirs are low and some communities have been forced to take 'dramatic steps' to reduce water consumption.

Martinez's declaration will make it easier for farmers, ranchers and communities to secure federal funding for expenses related to the drought.

Martinez also ordered the states drought plan to be reviewed, and she urged municipatlities to consider implementing firework bans and other fire restrictions.

The governor's office said Tuesday that the state water trust board is giving $600,000 to the northern New Mexico community of Las Vegas for engineering work related to repairs on a dam the community depends on for its water supplyl
