Gov. Perry To Deliver State Of The State Speech

Gov. Rick Perry will detail his legislative priorities in a State of the State address sure to urge keeping government spending low despite brighter economic times for Texas.

Tuesday marks Perry's seventh such address before a joint legislative session since replacing George W. Bush as governor in December 2000.

Two years ago, Perry declared there would be "no sacred cows" immune to deep cuts as the state struggled with budget deficits and a sluggish economy.

The economy has brightened as the Legislature opens it session this year. But draft budgets remain austere and Perry has urged lawmakers to limit state spending at all costs.

The 2011 Perry was also gearing up for an ultimately unsuccessful presidential run. Now, Perry is mulling whether to seek another term as governor next year.
