Grand Jury: Santa Fe Police Shooting Not Justified

A grand jury has concluded that Santa Fe police officers weren't justified in shooting an unarmed 25-year-old man in the face.

Neither of the two officers has been charged but District Attorney Angela "Spence" Pacheco said she'll turn over the case to a special prosecutor to determine whether charges should be filed. She announced the grand jury's findings Friday.

Roberto Mendez was shot in the cheek at a convenience store during the August 2013 incident. Police said at the time that the officers were checking an SUV matching the description of a stolen vehicle.

According to police, Mendez was the driver and the officers fired as the vehicle was backing up.

Pacheco says grand jurors reviewed New Mexico State Police reports on the incident, photographs and video from dashboard cameras.
