New Mexico – New Mexico's Public Education Department is getting federal funds to provide students with locally grown fresh fruits and vegetables.
The school project will receive more than $2 million from The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Fresh Fruits and Vegetables Program to buy fruits and vegetables that are given to students at no charge.
Democratic Sen. Jeff Bingaman announced the federal grant.
He says the initiative helps children learn healthy eating habits, and has the added benefit of supporting local farmers.
