Greg Lennes: LC Chamber Sponsors "Right Wing" Candidate Training

Here we go again. I don't understand why the Greater Las Cruces Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring "New Leaders Grassroots Training" for right-wing political candidates on May 9. It is run by the tea party-connected American Majority, a far right-wing libertarian group. So if you are a moderate, nonpartisan, truly business-minded or liberal candidate you should not attend, right?

An ultra-conservative, Ned Ryun, is behind the American Majority organization that is training new tea party candidates running for a school board, city council or other local offices. There is nothing wrong with his goals. However, it is deplorable for our local chamber to become a vassal of the tea party.

The goal of the chamber should be to further the interests of businesses. Unfortunately, it appears the chamber leadership is more interested in political ideology. The chamber's present leadership seems to lack any understanding of business fundamentals.
Our local chamber should follow the example of numerous other state and local chambers. It should become truly "nonpartisan in its approach, and not endorse or oppose legislation based upon political party philosophies or political party sponsorship. Nor should the Chamber of Commerce endorse or support candidates for public office."

Then there is the question of the costly and divisive recall. What role did the partisan chamber leadership play in the recent recall attempt of three excellent city councilors?

Is it a coincidence that the American Majority has sponsored recall training for right-wing community leaders?

If I was a business owner and a member of the chamber, I would think seriously about resigning from this now-partisan political organization.
The GLCCC needs new leadership that really understands business and economics.
