Group Continues Fight To Save Smokestacks

A group of citizens is banding together in an effort to prevent the demolition of two iconic smokestacks in El Paso.  But the idea is not finding many friends in the city, where residents fought for years to shutter the copper smelter.

The towers' red and white stripes and ASARCO sign can be seen from miles away amid the mountains near the Mexican border. One of the stacks stands at more than 820 feet tall.

The Save the Stacks group asked the city to save the smokestacks, but officials passed a resolution supporting the effort as long as it doesn't cost the city any money.

Still, the group believes there is a chance to save the hulking towers and turn them into the nation's tallest monument.
