Albuquerque – An Albuquerque gun store is challenging a federal requirement that weapons dealers in four border states must report multiple sales of semi-automatic rifles.
Ron Peterson Firearms was among more than 8,000 gun dealers in New Mexico, Texas, Arizona and California that were ordered last month to report multiple sales of such weapons to the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
Peterson filed a lawsuit Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Albuquerque, asking a judge to prevent the order from taking effect Aug. 14.
The ATF says the rule is intended to stem the flow of high-powered rifles and assault weapons across the U.S.-Mexico border and into the hands of drug cartels.
Peterson's attorney tells The Albuquerque Journal (http://bit.ly/ng5NLC) that the ATF has exceeded its authority.
