Commentary: SANTA FE, NM -- Today, Americans for Responsible Solutions, the gun violence prevention organization founded by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and retired NASA astronaut Captain Mark Kelly, and the New Mexico Coalition for Common Sense, issued the below statement following the tragic shootings in Northern New Mexico that left five people dead.
Kelly Famiglietta, President, Domestic Violence Resource Center, Inc., advisory committee member for the New Mexico Coalition for Common Sense:
“Once again, our country has experienced another painful gun violence tragedy. Last night’s shootings in Northern New Mexico should horrify all of us. We must not allow these senseless acts of violence to become the new normal. While we still don’t know all the details of how this attack came to be, we know that any loss of innocent life is a tragedy. I join my fellow New Mexicans in praying for the families and loved ones of those who were lost in this attack. I hope we can use this moment as an opportunity to come together and help build a New Mexico that is a better and safer place for all.”
About Americans For Responsible Solutions’ Work In New Mexico
This year, Americans for Responsible Solutions and the New Mexico Coalition for Common Sense worked to advance a responsible bill that would have helped limit domestic abusers’ access to guns by establishing effective procedures and providing guidance and assurance to law enforcement, victims, and advocates. After passing the legislature, the bipartisan bill (SB 259) was ultimately vetoed by Governor Susana Martinez.
