Heinrich Considers Senate Run

By KRWG News

New Mexico – Democratic U.S. Rep. Martin Heinrich says he's considering running for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Democrat Jeff Bingaman.

Bingaman announced Friday he will not seek re-election when his fifth term in the Senate expires in 2012.

Heinrich won a second term in November to represent New Mexico's 1st Congressional District, which takes in Albuquerque and areas surrounding it.

He says that since Bingaman's announcement, many constituents and friends across the state have asked if he will run for that seat.

Heinrich released a statement Sunday saying he hasn't made a decision, but plans to actively consider running.

He says his decision will be based on whether he believes he can best serve New Mexico in the House or in the Senate.
