Heinrich Marks 20 Years Of AmeriCorps

Senator Martin Heinrich (D) New Mexico

U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.), the first AmeriCorps alum to serve in the United States Senate and a member of the National Service Congressional Caucus, released the following statement commemorating the 20th Anniversary of AmeriCorps. Senator Heinrich is a cosponsor of a resolution recognizing the 20th anniversary of AmeriCorps. The anniversary is tomorrow, Friday, September 12, 2o14.

"For 20 years, more than 900,000 AmeriCorps members have contributed more than 1 billon hours of service to strengthen communities across the country, solve problems, and expand economic and educational opportunities. My experience as an AmeriCorps member instilled in me that public service can not only make a difference in improving the lives of those around us, but also provides lifelong personal enrichment. I've met a number of AmeriCorps members working on projects in New Mexico, and it's clear that they keep close to their hearts the reasons that drove them to join the organization in the first place while they work in the program and long after. It's clear that investing in AmeriCorps is an investment in our nation's future."

Senator Heinrich will join the President at the White House for a ceremony in commemoration of the 20th Anniversary of AmeriCorps on Friday, September 12, 2014.

AmeriCorps is a national service organization administered by the Corporation of National and Community  Service Programs and engages approximately 80,000 individuals in more than 15,000 locations across the country. In exchange for 1,700 hours of service, AmeriCorps members earn a $5,730 Segal AmeriCorps Education Award to help pay for collage or pay student loans. Individuals interested in the program can learn more and apply online here.
