A southeastern New Mexico city is under a water conservation program requiring residents to limit water use during spring and summer.
The Hobbs News-Sun reports that Hobbs is seeking to preserve the water supply from the city's only source, the Ogallala Aquifer. Utilities director Tim Woomer says the aquifer is a shallow water table underneath the Great Plains.
The city's utilities department recently released a flier with the new regulations stemming from an ordinance passed in December. Water conservation will begin May 15 and will end September 15 of each year.
Between those dates, residents living at even numbered street addresses may use commercial or domestic water for gardens only on even numbered calendar days. Residents living at odd numbered addresses may use water outside on odd days.
