I-10 Funding Update

By KRWG News

New Mexico – The U.S. Department of Transportation has released $1.9 million for a widening and reconstruction project on Interstate 10 from Las Cruces to the Texas border. That goes with $10 million already issued in federal stimulus funds.

The freeway will be expanded from four-lane road to a six-lane road.

Sen. Jeff Bingaman, D-N.M., says the 20-mile stretch was built in the early 1970s and needs to be improved. Sen. Tom Udall, D-N.M., says the effort will improve safety and ease traffic congestion on the heavily traveled corridor from Las Cruces to El Paso, Texas.

Work began on the project in August and is expected to be completed in 2011.
