Immigrant Advocates Plan To Be Active During Campaigns

Immigrant advocates and religious organizations in New Mexico say they may have won the latest battle against efforts to repeal a state law that allows illegal immigrants to have driver's licenses.

But advocates say they are regrouping and plan to hold more forums and town hall meetings around the state as they prepare for the repeal to become a campaign issue.

Marcela Diaz, executive director of Somos Un Pueblo Unido, a Santa Fe-based immigrant advocacy group, says advocates will continue to hold forums with elected officials and town hall meetings around the state.

State lawmakers failed to come up with a compromise for a repeal of the law or a bill to weed out fraud during a 30-day session that ended earlier this month.
