Indigenous dancers compete at North America's largest powwow

North America's largest powwow is underway in New Mexico.

Nearly all of the 3,000 indigenous dancers in attendance for the 33rd annual Gathering of Nations packed the floor at University of New Mexico Arena on Friday following a grand entrance that shook the venue.

The dancers approached from each stairway and spiraled inward until the arena floor was packed. The pace was set by the music of singers and drum groups stationed at the edges.

Spectators caught glimpses of feathered bustles, buckskin dresses and beaded head and hair pieces — all elements of some of the dancers' elaborate outfits with detailed, hand-stitched designs.

Most dancers at the Gathering of Nations compete for prize money during the weekend powwow.

Organizers say the annual event draws more than 100,000 people to Albuquerque.
