An inmate at the Southern New Mexico Correctional Facility hospitalized after being assaulted by other inmates has been released from the hospital.
New Mexico Corrections Department said Saturday that the inmate was treated for his injuries at a Las Cruces hospital and was transported back to the Southern New Mexico Correctional Facility on Friday evening.
Officials said the inmate and his attackers will be identified as the investigation unfolds.
Authorities say preliminary evidence shows the Level 3 inmate was attacked by three other inmates inside the gym during recreation time at about 3:15 p.m. Friday.
Officials say the attackers will be segregated from the rest of the prison population until the investigation is complete.
