It's Teacher Appreciation Week

http://nm.aft.org/

Commentary:  Since 1984, the National Parent Teacher Association has designated the first full week in May as “Teacher Appreciation Week.”

We know here at AFT NM that it is more than just the teacher who helps to create a positive environment in our public schools and educational institutions – it is the educational assistants, support personnel, nurses, transportation, councilors, facilities personnel, secretaries, and cafeteria workers who all lend a hand to our students’ successful learning.

We also know that successful students’ education begins with our earliest learners even before public school and continues through higher education, and eventually will lead to a lifelong career.

It is important to remember each and every day an educator reports to their school or educational institution that along with saying “Thanks” needs to come respect – respect for each of us as professionals, but also respect when it comes to the evaluation of our work, respect of our desire to negotiate a fair contract, and respect of our right as workers to organize for positive change in our schools, educational institutions, and state.

Each and every day, AFT New Mexico keeps this important thought in mind as we represent New Mexico’s educators in all that we do – For all of the educators who play a part – we say “THANK YOU!”

Each educator’s hard work deserves to be recognized and honored, not only this week, but throughout the year. We hope that your week will be filled with many parents and students saying “Thank You!”

Sincerely,

Stephanie Ly
