Jail Inmates Start Fire, Disturbance Brought Under Control

Inmates started a fire at the McKinley County Detention Center on Thursday as they were being moved to another part of the jail in response to a plumbing problem.

County spokesman Doug Decker said a group of inmates who had yet to be moved had barricaded themselves in and somehow started a fire.

Inmates were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation and minor injuries, but none were taken to hospitals. No jail employees were injured.

The disturbance started when wardens were called into an area of the jail where toilets had backed up.

Decker says law enforcement officers and firefighters got the situation under control quickly.

Officers used nonlethal means similar to tear gas to subdue the barricaded inmates.

The jail was under lockdown Thursday night.
