Jail Tops Spending In Curry County

By KRWG News

Curry County, New Mexico – CLOVIS, N.M. (KRWG) The cost of running the jails in Curry County has shot to the top of the county's spending priorities.

The county finance manager says with a growth rate of a little more than 8 percent a year, the jail's budget for fiscal year 2012 is more than $1 million greater than it was in 2008.

Commissioners approved a $12.1 million preliminary budget May 24, slightly higher than the $11.7 million budget for last year. The Clovis News Journal reports the final budget has to be approved and submitted to the state by the end of July.

Curry County Commissioner Bobby Sandoval says he's not surprised at the growth of the jail's budget, which he thinks comes with running a detention center.
