James Carville Discusses 2016 Election

James Carville says the Clinton Campaign still has a long way to go before Election Day.

“They’re doing some things better than other things,” Carville said. “But we’ve got a lot to go here. Remember we’ve got 3 debates ahead of us, and so far everything has been sort of convoluted, it’s been a kind of back and forth. I think they are going to be very well prepared; they’ve raised a lot of money. But like anybody else, I see these polls and I get a little nervous.”

Both Clinton and Trump have high unfavorability ratings, Carville says part of that is the political climate.

“We have demeaned politics for so long it’s not unusual that people in politics would have a high disapproval rating,” Carville said. “So, I think there is things that she can do to partially correct some of this and make it better. I suspect when she has a chance to go one on one with the people, and she’ll have three 90 minute debates to do that, I think she’ll do better.”

Carville says the Clinton Campaign needs to respond to negative media coverage and criticism quicker.

“I would be much more aggressive,” Carville said. “And I would not let these stories sit there and fester, and assume that somebody else was going to do my job for me. The only person that is going to do that job is you.”

Carville says voter turnout is going to be important to the election outcome.

“I think that we’ve got to be very aggressive,” Carville said. “I think that it is a little bit troubling, the millennials are a troubling part of this election. We can bring some enthusiasm to the African American Community. There’s a lot of things that you can do. I think you can get the President out there a little bit more. I think you can talk about what’s at stake in the country.”

Carville says talking about Donald Trump’s proposals can help get Democrats to the polls in November.

“You can talk about the crazy ideas he has,” Carville said. “I mean there’s no prohibition against talking about what a 35% tariff on every imported good in this country would mean. There’s no prohibition on coming to New Mexico and talking about what it would mean to deport hundreds of thousands of people that are living here in New Mexico. There’s no prohibition on talking about how idiotic it would be to be a wall.”
