Join Las Cruces Utilities’ 2017 Spring Stroll

“Come out to the garden, enjoy coffee and pastries while you learn how to plant and irrigate a garden in the desert - surrounded by beautiful blooming healthy plants that are grown in our area with the use of efficient irrigation and local free compost,” invites Rhonda Diaz, water conservation program coordinator.

This Wednesday, May 24th, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. come stroll the Demonstration Garden at Las Cruces Utilities (LCU) Administration offices, 680 N. Motel Blvd.

This year the first 100 attendees will be offered a free water-wise Moonshine Yarrow flowering plant, voted one of 20 favorite perennial flowers by Sunset Magazine.

Three experts will be available in person to answer bug, weed, and tree questions! Carol Sutherland, Ph.D., NMSU Extension entomologist, Leslie Beck, Ph.D., NMSU Extension weed specialist, and tree expert John White, curator of the UTEP Chihuahuan Desert Gardens, all join the Spring Stroll.

Enjoy demonstrations to learn how to apply beneficial Class A+ Compost (“Black Gold”) to green up and feed your turf and garden, while reducing outdoor watering. Attendees are invited to take home a free bag of the biosolid compost and/or composted mulch produced from the community’s green waste at the Old Foothills Landfill (available in limited supply).

“LCU will also offer printed copies of The Garden Guide,” says Diaz, “full of color photos describing more than 60 different plant species that flourish in our southern New Mexico desert.” (The 48-page Demonstration Garden Guide is also available online and can be downloaded by anyone at any time at: www.las-cruces.org/DemoGarden)

The Spring Stroll is a very local way to take the guesswork out of what to plant, and offers good information to help guide residents and businesses to having beautiful yards, using moderate amounts of water. Join us!
