Juarez Officer Seeks Asylum

By KRWG News

Juarez, Mexico – A police officer from the violent border city of Ciudad Juarez who fled to the U.S. along with his wife and children is asking for asylum.

Jose Alarcon's case was set to be heard in Dallas immigration court on Tuesday.

Alarcon and his attorney must prove that as a municipal officer, he belonged to a social group that was persecuted and that the government was unable to protect him.

Alarcon's attorney, Ludo Perez Gardini, tells The Dallas Morning News he believes that Alarcon was a specific target because he was an officer who dared arrest the wrong people.

The U.S. government attorney declined to comment on the pending case.

More than 4,000 people have been killed in Ciudad Juarez, across the border from El Paso, in drug-related violence in the last two years.
