July Las Cruces Area Arts Events

The Doña Ana Arts Council’s (DAAC) Arts & Cultural Center, 1740 Calle de Mercado, Suite D, in Mesilla, is the place to go for programs such as Get ArtRageous! two-hour art classes, musical performances such as the new Casa Concerts, and Promoting Art in the Mesilla Valley presentations. This summer, DAAC also continues to offer outstanding opportunities for creative children. July 9 – 13, 10 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.

Missoula Children’s Theatre’s week-long theatre experience for kindergarten through 12thgrade students. Try outs for “Peter and Wendy” will be held Monday, July 9, beginning at 10 a.m. with registration at 9:45 a.m. at the Oñate High School Performing Arts Center, 5700 Mesa Grande Drive. Plan for two hours for tryouts. Registration for children who are cast is $60 due when cast, with partial scholarships available. The performance will be Friday, July 13, at 7 p.m. at Oñate High School’s Performing Arts Center.  Donations will be accepted at the door.

Get ArtRageous! Art Class: Acrylic roadrunner with Sally Quillin.

Learn to paint our state bird in a fun, two-hour class with local artist and art teacher Sally Quillin.   $30 includes all materials and light refreshments.

Saturday, July 14, 4 – 7 p.m.

As part of the 10-10 Arts Hop in July, the Arts & Cultural Center will exhibit the colorful and often whimsical art of Daphne Wirthlin. She was born in England and brought up living in countries all over the globe. As a child, she was an avid photographer and spent much of her time photographing people and animals with her Brownie camera. In 1996, she moved to the Southwest. It was in Las Cruces that Wirthlin started to paint, greatly impacted by the wildlife around her. In her work as a wildlife and nature painter, she uses her bird and animal photographs whenever possible.

10-10 Arts Hop - 12 hours of Art in Las Cruces Every Second Saturday. 

10-10 Arts Hop promotes art viewing and activities in greater Las Cruces 10AM to 10PM with special events Every Second Saturday of the month. 

10-10 Arts Hop is cultivating the arts community with free and open to the public art exhibits, kids programming, and entertainment. Current participating galleries are University Art Gallery (10 a.m. – 4 p.m.), Cutter Gallery (10 a.m. – 3 p.m.), DAAC Arts and Cultural Center (4 -7 p.m., Rokoko Art Gallery (4 – 7 p.m.), Four Points Perspective (7 – 10 p.m. and Art Obscura (7 – 10 p.m.).

Get ArtRageous! Art Class: Pet Portraits with Judy Martinez.  Learn to paint portraits of pets.  $30 includes all materials and light refreshments.

“Made in New Mexico”

Movie expert Jeff Berg will show film clips from his “Made in New Mexico” series, featuring segments of movies filmed in the Land of Enchantment. Berg has presented his “Made in New Mexico” film clip series throughout the state and is the author of the book “New Mexico Filmmaking.” He also served on the board of the Mesilla Valley Film Society and writes reviews for films shown at the Fountain Theatre. 

Admission is $5.

FEED YOUR MIND Summer Short Course with Kathleen Key, Art Historian

“The Fab Four Artists - Turner, Singer Sargent, Sorolla and Wyeth Family”

The 4-part seminar series will be presented on Monday evenings from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. in July and August at the DAAC Arts & Cultural Center.  Cost is $50 for the 4-part series or $20 for a “drop in” fee per seminar.  Register on-line at daarts.org, by calling 575-523-6403, or at the Arts & Cultural Center, 1740 Calle de Mercado, Mesilla.  Refreshments will be available at 5:00 p.m. and the seminar will start at 5:30 p.m.  All proceeds from FEED YOUR MIND seminars go to benefit Arts Council programs for children.

Get ArtRageous! Art Class: Abstract painting with black light effects by Tiffany Figueroa.  Create your own abstract painting with artist Tiffany Figueroa.  $30 includes all materials and light refreshments.

Promoting Art in the Mesilla Valley: LAB – Learning Action Buffet with Michelle Valverde and Armando Arellano.

The LAB nurtures youth leadership and purpose through the arts, communication, and action. Via an intergenerational hub of creative and supportive activities and services, LAB participants explore and pursue personal, educational, and life goals while making a positive difference in the community. In short, the LAB is a creative space where youth design their future. Promoting Art in the Mesilla Valley is free and open to the public.
