Deming – The Luna County Sheriff's Office won a $225,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Justice as one of eight recipients of such aid to border-area law enforcement agencies.
The grants are aimed at fighting crime and drugs on the nation's southern and northern borders.
The sheriff's office will use the grant money to hire two deputies.
The Espanola Police Department also will receive a $198,000 grant to hire officers who will improve its ability to identify drug trafficking organizations, gather intelligence on them and reduce drug-related crime.
