Key Witness Testifies In New Mexico Murder Trial

A key prosecution witness has been called to testify in the capital murder trial of an escaped Arizona inmate.

John McCluskey's cousin and girlfriend, Casslyn Welch, told jurors Monday that she and McCluskey became romantically involved in 2007. The pair referred to each other as husband and wife even though they weren't legally married.

Welch says she helped McCluskey and two other inmates escape in July 2010 by supplying firearms and a getaway vehicle.

McCluskey is being tried on federal carjacking and murder charges in the August 2010 deaths of a couple whose bodies were found incinerated in their burned travel trailer in eastern New Mexico.

Prosecutors say Gary and Linda Haas of Tecumseh, Okla., were targeted by the fugitives for their truck and trailer and McCluskey was the triggerman.
