King Campaign: False Claims In New Martinez TV Ad

Office of the Governor

In releasing copies of Martinez emails, Attorney General Gary King was complying with a legitimate news media request under the state’s Inspection of Public Records Act, not playing politics, as falsely claimed in a recent TV ad.  Martinez clearly wanted him to protect her from potential repercussions by breaking New Mexico open records law.  AG King had no role in “publicizing” the governor’s emails...the media was entitled to do so.   The emails in question were delivered to the AG’s Office, the office did not seek them out from any source.  Martinez wanted the Attorney General to protect her personal emails, apparently, the Spanx order wasn’t the only thing she wanted to hide.

Her recent attack ad that claims Gary King cannot be trusted to do the right thing is pathetic and desperate.  In Martinez’ mind, the “right thing” in this case would have been to illegally withhold the emails from public view.  Even her Chief of Staff was caught on a secret recording saying, “That’s why I never email on my state email anything that can come back to bite my ass. It’s all done offline. I never—sh*t, I never use my state email because it is all done on different stuff ’cause I don’t want to go to court or jail.”

“The governor obviously condones a culture of secrecy, yet she accuses me of being dishonest?,” says King.  “I think New Mexico is sick and tired of her lies and misdirection tactics on TV...people should be asking why is she not talking about the issues affecting our state?  The Martinez ads are designed to draw attention away from the fact that New Mexico has fallen to the bottom of the nation in child welfare and economic growth, and that she has failed to even try to address the problems of our struggling citizens."
