Lara Calls On Pearce To Reject The Republican Budget

Today, Washington Republicans rolled out a budget proposal that would have damaging effects on New Mexico’s seniors, students and middle-class families. The budget would raise taxes on middle-class New Mexico families in order to cut taxes for millionaires and billionaires, give tax breaks to corporations that ship New Mexico jobs overseas, and cut Pell Grants for New Mexico’s low-income students.

In addition, the budget would risk the retirement savings of New Mexico’s seniors by ending the Medicare guarantee and turning it into a voucher program, raising seniors’ costs and reopening the prescription drug donut hole.

“The hardworking families of southern New Mexico are clear in their opposition to the irresponsible budget proposal unveiled today by Congressman Pearce’s Republican colleagues,” said Rocky Lara. “It’s long past due that Washington refocuses their priorities to promote job creation and economic growth, instead of rewarding millionaires and billionaires while raising taxes on middle-class families and ending the Medicare guarantee for seniors. I call on Congressman Pearce to put aside partisan politics and join me in opposing this dangerous budget proposal. We need to cut spending and reduce the deficit, but we can’t do it on the backs of New Mexico’s middle-class families and seniors.”
