Las Crucen Picked To Attend Student Veterans Leadership Institute

Las Cruces, NM – Vista College Student Cody Morris has been invited to attend the Student Veterans of America (SVA) Leadership Institute, July 31-August 2, 2013, in Indianapolis, IN.  Of 800 applicants seeking to participate at the Institute, Morris is one of 42 students selected nationwide.

Enrolled in the Medical Information Specialist program at Vista College in Las Cruces, Morris is a U.S. Army and Army Reserve veteran who was stationed in Schweinfurt, Germany and deployed to Iraq in 2004-2005. Among his accomplishments at Vista College, Morris co-founded Vista Veterans, the local SVA chapter, earlier this year.

Although a new organization, the Vista SVA chapter has already assisted the United Military Women of the SouthWest with a local food drive, supported the Run for the Wall (a cross-country motorcycle ride from Los Angeles to the Vietnam Memorial in Washington D.C. by national veterans organizations), and begun planning a local veteran’s career fair to take place this September.

The SVA Leadership Institute brings together SVA Chapter leaders for intensive leadership training.  During his time at the Institute, Morris will learn about chapter best practices and operational concepts designed to strengthen local chapters.

“I am incredibly proud of Cody Morris for gaining this important recognition and of the entire Las Cruces Vista College faculty, staff and students who have all pitched in to make Vista Veterans already such a success,” said Vista College CEO Jim Tolbert.  “I know the lessons he will learn at the Institute will help make a strong organization even stronger.”
