Las Cruces Area Prisoner Cuts Himself With Razor

A man who was about to be sentenced for a murder conviction cut himself with a razor blade and had to be forcibly removed from a court holding cell and rushed to a hospital.

An investigation is being conducted into how 38-year-old Dominic Martin Montoya obtained the razor that he used to cut his arms and neck on Friday.

Montoya was supposed to be sentenced Friday for his murder conviction in the 2006 killing of 29-year-old Adam Avalos, then a fellow detainee at the Dona Ana County Detention Center, with a jail-issued razor.

The sentencing hearing hasn't yet been rescheduled.

But Judge Douglas Driggers says the sentencing, whether it happens, can go on without Montoya.
