Las Cruces Armed Robbery Suspect Arrested

A man suspected of robbing a woman at gunpoint two weeks ago near University Avenue has been arrested.

Vincent C. Montano, 39, of Mesilla Park, was arrested Friday, Sept. 27, and charged with one count of armed robbery.

Las Cruces Police learned that at around 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 19, a 40-year-old woman was walking to her car on Chaparral Street near University Avenue when she was approached by a man who demanded her cell phone. The woman hesitated until the suspect threatened her with a black handgun.

The man took the woman’s cell phone and shoulder bag which contained identification and bank cards, amongst other items. The man was seen leaving the area, heading northbound, in a red car.

Within a couple hours of the robbery, the victim learned that her bank cards had been used at various businesses within Las Cruces. Detectives contacted each business and obtained information which ultimately led them to identify Montano as the suspect.

Montano was arrested Friday morning. Additional charges are pending. It is not known if Montano is responsible for any other armed robberies that have been committed in the area.

Montano is being held at the Dona Ana County Detention Center with a cash-only bond set at $25,000.
