Las Cruces Police arrested two men suspected of committing an armed robbery late Sunday evening near Young Park.
Javier D. Valenzuela and Armando Rodriguez, both 29, are charged with one third-degree felony count each of robbery. Valenzuela was also charged with possession of marijuana.
Las Cruces Police detectives learned that at around 10 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 24, two teenage boys were walking along Walnut Street, near Young Park, when they were approached by a bald, shirtless man armed with a handgun and a man wearing a white T-shirt. The armed man pointed the gun at the teenagers, ordered them to the ground and demanded they hand over their valuables.
The teens complied and placed two cell phones, a small speaker and headphones on the ground. The second suspect picked up the property and the two men fled toward Young Park. No injuries were reported.
Within just a few minutes Las Cruces Police located Valenzuela and Rodriguez in Young Park. Valenzuela and Rodriguez matched the description of the suspects and were found to be in the possession of the victims’ property. Police also located the handgun Valenzuela is believed to have used to commit the robbery. The gun was determined to be a replica that closely resembles an authentic firearm.
Valenzuela and Rodriguez were booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center with bonds set at $10,000 each.
