Las Cruces Bike Giveaway Saturday

By KRWG News

Las Cruces – Las Cruces firefighters, public safety officers, local business and community volunteers will participate in this Saturday's "Las Cruces Bike Giveaway" to be held at Sisbarro Dealerships.

The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 11, at Sisbarro Dealerships (Certified Used Cars Lot), which is located at 425 West Boutz.

The "Las Cruces Bike Giveaway" is sponsored by firefighters, public safety officers, and local area businesses, as a way to honor deserving underprivileged and tragedy stricken youth. Organizers expect to give away as many as 300 bicycles and riding helmets to local youth on Saturday (recipients have been prequalified and predetermined.) Donations for/of additional bicycles and riding helmets will be accepted up to and during the event and can be dropped off at any Las Cruces Fire Station or any Sisbarro Dealership.

Saturday's event will also include McGruff the Crime Dog and his sidekick Scruff, two children's identification programs, a bicycle rodeo, pet adoptions, NMSU Cheer squads, Boxing exhibitions by Professional, PAL national champion, NM Hall of fame and local "Rumble in Rio" boxers, US Air Force "Raptor Mini-Jet" and interactive exhibit, XTreme Modified Dirt Circle Track Race Car, a educational fire prevention "smoke trailer", CPR training and various other public safety demonstrations with entertainment by professional DJ.

The bike giveaway program began in 2003 when Jim Franklin, an evidence technician with the Rio Rancho Department of Public Safety, proposed the idea of restoring damaged bicycles in that city's impound lot and giving them away to deserving youth during the holidays. The idea expanded with the "Rumble in Rio" boxing competition between firefighters and public safety officers held annually in the Albuquerque area. As of this year's "Rumble in Rio VII", the organization has raised more than $300,000 and provided nearly 4000 new bicycles for underprivileged children across New Mexico.

Local charitable organization "Dynamic Youth in Motion" has once again taken on the challenge of expanding the idea started by Jim Franklin to the Las Cruces and surrounding area and will present this year's fourth annual event in cooperation with the "Rumble in Rio" organization.
