Las Cruces Construction Site Crash Leaves 1 Injured, 1 Jailed

A two-vehicle industrial accident at a construction site seriously injured one man and resulted in a DWI charge for the man driving a water tanker.

Edward A. Sanchez, 56, of the 1500 block of Pradero Dorado Arc, is charged with driving under the influence causing great bodily harm, driving on expired tags, driving without insurance and driving with restrictions.

A 36-year-old construction worker injured a leg when he was pinned between two large vehicles. He was airlifted to University Medical Center of El Paso. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

At about 3 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 9, police were dispatched to the industrial accident at the construction site of the new Walmart store near the intersection of Lohman Avenue and Sonoma Ranch Boulevard.

Traffic investigators learned that a front-end loader was backing up when a water tanker, driven by Sanchez, pulled in behind the loader. A 36-year-old construction worker was riding on the side of the water tanker and was injured when the loader backed into the tanker.

Police later determined that Sanchez was under the influence of liquor or drugs. He was arrested and booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center where he is initially being held without bond.
