Las Cruces Continues Tradition Of Separate Rivalry Game Days

LAS CRUCES— Drawing a standing-room-only crowd of parents, students and community members, the announcement that the Oñate-Centennial High School rivalry football game would be played Thursday, Nov. 2 at Aggie Memorial Stadium drew support from the broad range of high school representatives in attendance. As part of the announcement, the Las Cruces-Mayfield High School rivalry football game was consequently scheduled for the following day, Friday, Nov. 3, at Aggie Memorial Stadium.

The announcement was made by Superintendent Dr. Greg Ewing, who negotiated with the LCPS Director of Athletics Ernie Viramontes and all four comprehensive high school Principals to reach an agreement regarding the games. Ewing also initiated the development of a task force to study the logistics, feasibility and cost of scheduling future rivalry games beginning in 2018.

“I’m thankful and grateful for all the feedback I received. Going forward, we want to be transparent, open, and most importantly, supportive of students. So, by working with the principals and the Director of Athletics, we see this as an opportunity to continue to support students at all four comprehensive high schools,” Ewing said.

At the previous LCPS School Board Work Session on June 6, a proposal to examine the logistics of a doubleheader football game, where all four comprehensive high school football teams would compete on the same day at Aggie Memorial Stadium, prompted a flurry of discussions among representatives from all four high schools.

Individuals interested in serving on the task force should contact Viramontes at (575) 527-5812 or eviramontes@lcps.net.
