Las Cruces Cousins Charged In Auto Burglaries

Las Cruces Police arrested two cousins suspected of burglarizing a pair of vehicles at an apartment complex Saturday morning.

Jose Frank Madrid, 31, and Sean Melendrez, 18, were each charged with two counts of burglary, and one count each of conspiracy; and resisting, evading or obstructing an officer. Melendrez was also charged with being in possession of burglary tools.

At around 5 a.m. Saturday, March 9, Las Cruces Police were called to an apartment complex at 1155 Montana Ave. after a resident saw two men rummaging through a vehicle.

As officers arrived at the complex they saw two men, later identified as Madrid and Melendrez, inside a red Ford F150 pickup. As officers approached the pickup, the two men took off running.

Both men were captured after brief foot pursuits. Officers later determined that Madrid and Melendrez broke into and burglarized at least two vehicles in the parking lot. Officers discovered that Melendrez was carrying a screwdriver that he was believed to have used to commit the burglaries.

Madrid and Melendrez were booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center with bonds set at $10,000 each.
