Las Cruces Crash Victim Identified

Sep 2, 2014

The 84-year-old woman who died as a result of last Thursday’s two-vehicle crash on Lohman Avenue has been identified as Cuca Gilliland of Las Cruces.

Traffic investigators learned that, at around 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 28, Gilliland was driving a 1996 Toyota Avalon when, it appears, she was leaving the Arroyo Plaza parking lot at 2001 E. Lohman Ave. Investigators believe Gilliland briefly entered Lohman heading westbound but then attempted a U-turn.

Her vehicle was struck broadside, on the driver’s side, by a westbound 2005 Nissan Altima driven by 30-year-old Toni Fry. The crash occurred in the westbound lanes of traffic in front of the Arroyo Plaza.

Gilliland was rushed to MountainView Regional Medical Center but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Fry was not seriously injured in the crash.

Alcohol and speed are not considered to be contributing factors in the crash and both drivers were believed to be wearing seatbelts. No citations were issued.
