Las Cruces Feels The Bern

Senator Bernie Sanders

Primary Debates are heating up across the country with the Iowa Caucuses beginning today, and here in Las Cruces people are making their decisions about which candidates to support as well.

Jerry Nachison, an organizer with Las Cruces for Bernie says he began supporting sanders because of his plans for higher education costs and health care, and he likes Sanders' tells it like it is attitude.

“It’s nice to hear someone say the truth, period,” Nachison said. “And he should be emulated by lots of others.”

Sanders is often described as an anti-establishment candidate, but Nachison doesn’t fully agree.

“I wouldn’t say he’s totally outside of the establishment,” Nachison said. “He’s been a part of the establishment since he became a congressman, and then a senator, and he’s been a mayor. So, we can argue that one. He’s coming at it from the inside, knowing what’s wrong, and going  forward to say we’re going to fix what’s wrong by doing this.”

Nachison says as the primaries move forward he hopes more people are able to hear Bernie Sanders' message.

“Nationally, it’s only very recently because it looks like he may overtake Hillary,” Nachison said. “That the national media is starting to take notice, and that should have happened months ago, and it’s not just for Bernie, I say that for Governor O’Malley also even though he’s doing not so well in the polls.”

Nachison says support for Bernie is growing locally as well.

“Bernie is real,” Nachison said. “He is very real, and his numbers on our mailing list keep growing. There is a lot of interest here, and it’s going to grow larger and larger as the primary date comes closer, and we also see what’s happening in other parts of the country.”
