Las Cruces Gun Buyback Event Planned for July 28

The Las Cruces Police Department and the organization New Mexicans to Prevent Gun Violence will be co-hosting a gun buyback event on Saturday, July 28.

The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, July 28, at the East Mesa Public Safety Complex, 550 N. Sonoma Ranch Blvd.

LCPD officers will be on hand to accept handguns, shotguns and rifles in exchange for gift cards provided by New Mexicans to Prevent Gun Violence. The organization will be offering gift cards for most firearms including rifles, shotguns and handguns. Gift cards range in value from $100 to $250 depending on the firearm collected.

No questions will be asked, and no identification needed to take part in the program.

When possible, handguns should be delivered in a sealed and clear plastic bag, and that bag should be placed in another container such as a gym bag, backpack or gun sheath that is not see-through. Shotguns and rifles should be transported in a proper case, sheath, or wrapped in a blanket or tarp.

  • Firearms must be delivered unloaded, with clips or magazines removed and carried separately from firearms.
  • Guns should be transported with the slide, or bolt, retracted and in an open position.
  • The packaged firearm can be left in your vehicle when you arrive at the East Mesa Public Safety Complex. An officer will retrieve the weapon from your vehicle.
  • Ammunition will not be accepted.
  • No explosives are allowed on premises.
  • Since LCPD and New Mexicans to Prevent Gun Violence are relying on anonymity, photography or video is discouraged.
  • Juveniles and others not permitted to carry firearms should refrain from transporting a gun to the buyback event.
  • No private transactions or sales will be permitted on premises.
  • Those who need assistance can contact an officer upon arrival.

Eligible firearms collected during the event will be destroyed in compliance with applicable state statutes.
