Las Cruces: La Llorona Festival A Celebration of Borderland Folklore

The Branigan Cultural Center is hosting the La Llorona Festival, a celebration of borderland folklore,Saturday October 17 from 10am to 2pm.

Here in the Borderlands almost everyone has a La Llorona story or knows somebody that has a La Llorona story. She is the Weeping Woman. The Woman in White. The Banshee. The Bruja. Her story varies from person to person, family to family. Those who live near the Rio Grande, the acequias and the arroyos have claimed to hear her wailing in the wind. She searches the waterways looking for her lost children, crying out "Mis hijos....mis hijos..."

We are here to celebrate her legend, her folklore, and the similar stories of many other cultures who have their own version of La Llorona.

Storytellers will be on hand starting at noon, giving their versions of the La Llorona tale, the public is invited to share their own stories too. Ballet Folklorico of El Paso will be performing in the Shannon Room of the Cultural Center after the storytelling. Vendors will be in the courtyard throughout the day, selling La Llorona and Dia de los Muertos themed artwork. A kids crafts table will be set up for the young ones to make and decorate their own Lucha Libre and Calaca masks.
