Las Cruces Legislator Introduces Bill To Enforce Protection Orders Across State Lines

By KRWG News

Las Cruces – Recognizing the importance of enforcing domestic violence protection orders, especially in communities near state borders, Rep. Joseph Cervantes (D-Las Cruces) introduced HB 209 today. The bill would enforce protection orders across state lines.

Rep. Cervantes said, "Victims of domestic violence are entitled to our greatest effort to maintain their personal safety and that of their families. Individuals should not be able to evade domestic violence orders simply by crossing state lines."

The bill is supported by the Uniform Law Commission. The organization promotes a system of state laws that are similar so that people moving between states are still affected by the same rules and regulations.

The bill heads to the House Consumer and Public Affairs Committee and the House Judiciary Committee for consideration.
