Las Cruces Man Arrested For DWI And Child Abuse

By KRWG News

Las Cruces – A Las Cruces man arrested Sunday for driving while intoxicated also faces child abuse charges for having his 1-year-old daughter along for the ride.

Christopher D. Serafin, 28, is charged with one count each of negligent child abuse and DWI. He also was cited for driving without insurance and for inappropriate lane usage.

Shortly after noon on Sunday, Dec. 12, a motorist called 911 to report the driver of a Nissan Sentra westbound on Highway 70 that was apparently weaving in and out of traffic, and failing to stop at red lights on north Main Street.

An LCPD officer spotted the vehicle traveling south on Solano Drive and initiated a traffic stop near Kansas Street. The officer found Serafin to have bloodshot and watery eyes, noticeably slurred speech and an odor of alcohol. Serafin's 1-year-old daughter was secured in a car seat in the rear of the vehicle.

The officer administered standard field sobriety tests on Serafin which he failed. LCPD detectives later learned that Serafin had consumed at least two malt beverages prior to getting behind the wheel of his vehicle.

Serafin's daughter was turned over to the custody of her mother.

Serafin was transported to the Dona Ana County Detention Center with bond set at $2,000.
