Las Cruces Man Arrested In Stabbing Death

A Las Cruces man has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder following a Doña Ana County Sheriff’s investigation into the stabbing death of 17-year-old David Escamilla.

Ismael Montoya, 20, surrendered to sheriff’s investigators Tuesday, accompanied by his attorney.

The incident happened on Oct. 19 in the 5200 block of Bravo after the 19-year-old man who lives there posted on Facebook that he was going to have a party while his mother was out of town.

About 100 people were at the party when four other people, including Montoya, arrived just after midnight. A confrontation ensued between Montoya, Escamilla, and Christopher Calzada, 19, who was a friend of Escamilla’s.

Both Escamilla and Calzada were stabbed during the altercation. Friends transported the two men to a Las Cruces-area hospital, where they were then sent to University Medical Center in El Paso.

Escamilla later died as a result of his wounds. An autopsy revealed he had suffered six stab wounds, two of which were to his lungs.
Calzada was treated and released.

Montoya also reportedly suffered a stab wound to his torso during the altercation, but did not seek medical attention.
Montoya surrendered to sheriff’s investigators late Tuesday afternoon, accompanied by his attorney. He is expected to be transported to the Doña Ana County Detention Center where he will be held on charges of second-degree murder and aggravated battery. His cash-only bond has been set at $100,000.
