Las Cruces Man Charged With Beating Father

Las Cruces Police arrested a man suspected of using an aluminum baseball bat to severely beat his 52-year-old father Thursday evening.

Vincent Lopez, 27, of the 800 block of Foster Road, is charged with one count of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, two counts of battery against a household member, and one count of evading or obstructing a peace officer.

Shortly after 8 p.m. Thursday, March 21, Las Cruces Police responded to a domestic confrontation in progress at the family’s apartment. The first-arriving officer observed Lopez and a sibling arguing in front of the apartment. Lopez refused to comply with numerous commands from the officer who was forced to deploy a Taser to subdue the suspect.

Detectives learned that an argument between parents caused Lopez to become upset with his father. Lopez began punching his father with closed fists until the 52-year-old man briefly lost consciousness. When his father regained consciousness, Lopez grabbed an aluminum baseball bat and used it to strike his father several more times.

The 52-year-old victim had visible bruising to his back, shoulders and head but the injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Lopez was booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center with bond set at $10,000.
